Sunday Curriculum

Scope and Sequence of Sunday School Curriculum at SBCC

CHILDREN'S CHURCH:

The children's church program is a graduated experience of learning which has the goal of helping children understand worship and participation in church life in age-appropriate forms. Children's church leaders will use scripture memory, seasonal themes and other curriculum as the basis for activities and worship during children's church sessions.

Scripture Memory:
In the Preschool to 6th grade we are on a two-year rotating sequence for memory as each children's church age group meets together two years. The children will memorize Psalm 100, 120, 23; 1 Corinthians 13; The Ten Commandments; Ephesians 6:10-18; and the books of the Bible during these years in the program.

SUNDAY SCHOOL:

PreK/Kindergarten

The curricular emphasis is on a variety of stories of the faith, balancing Old and New Testament content. The children will be taught some of the foundational stories on which our faith rests. In addition, they will learn music and do activities, which will hopefully reinforce the meaning of the lessons.

The special emphasis in the younger group (Beginners) is to equip them with listening skills and engage them in the stories at an age-appropriate level. We do this through providing repetition in the structure of the lessons, teaching what behaviors are expected and providing appropriate activities.

The older groups (Middles and Upper Pre-k/K) will be encouraged to go deeper with the same curriculum. For example, there will be more challenging application activities and longer stories at this level.

1/2 Grades

First Graders use a curriculum called "The ABCs of God" for the school year . It is a God-centered material that highlights a different characteristic of God each week, using the letter each characteristic begins with ("S" is for Sovereign; "I" is for Incomprehensible, etc.)

Second Graders learn "The Promises of God" for the school year. This is a God-centered material, which will enable the children to understand more about Who God is, and what His plans are for the world.

In the Summers, students in the 1st & 2nd Grade will learn about the Fruits of the Spirit one year then the background of the Jewish people in the second summer (the Old Testament portion is the backdrop for their memory work in the fall).

3/4 GRADES

Third Graders get an overview of the whole Bible in the fall followed by a focus on the early church. This will round out their learning by adding the units on the early church and the mission we have as Christians.

  • Fall (Walk Through the Bible)
  • Winter (Wind, Fire and Power-The Early Church)
  • Spring (Shipwrecks, Snakes, and Narrow Escapes-Paul's Missionary Journeys)

Fourth Graders will focus on a curriculum called "The Names of God". This enables them to appreciate the multifaceted nature of God and the necessity of revering Him.

During the summers, students in the 3rd and 4th grades will learn one year about "Heroes of the Faith" and the next year about David and the Psalms.
